What Are Microplastics?
Microplastics are extremely small pieces of plastic measuring less than five millimeters. Some are manufactured at that size for use in products, while others form when larger plastic items gradually break down.
Researchers sometimes separate them into two categories:

Plastic does not simply disappear. It breaks down into smaller and smaller particles that can remain in our environment for an extremely long time. Those particles have now been found throughout the world, from oceans and soil to drinking water and household dust.
How Are Microplastics Getting Into Our Bodies?
We are exposed to microplastics in several different ways.
We eat and drink them
Microplastics have been found in bottled water, seafood, table salt, packaged foods, tea bags, and other things many people consume regularly.
Plastic food packaging can also shed particles. That shedding and the migration of chemical additives may increase when plastic is heated, scratched, damaged, or repeatedly reused.
We breathe them
Microplastics can become part of the dust and air inside our homes.
Synthetic carpets, upholstered furniture, clothing, bedding, paint, and other household materials can release tiny plastic fibers or particles. Tire wear also contributes plastic particles to outdoor air, which can eventually make their way indoors.
We encounter them through everyday products
Plastic is woven into almost every part of modern life.
Possible sources include:
- Synthetic clothing
- Plastic food-storage containers
- Bottled water

- Nonstick cookware
- Personal-care products

In one study referenced by Beyond Plastics, polypropylene baby-food containers labeled “microwave safe” still released plastic particles after being heated in a microwave.
“Microwave-safe” does not mean particle-free
A “microwave-safe” label does not necessarily mean that a container is chemically inert or incapable of shedding plastic particles.
It generally means the container is designed to tolerate microwave heating without immediately melting, warping, or losing its shape. That is very different from guaranteeing that nothing can migrate into your food.
“BPA-free” does not mean plastic-free—or risk-free
This is where many people have been given a false sense of security.
“BPA-free” only tells you that one particular chemical—bisphenol A—was not used. It does not mean:
- The product contains no other chemical additives.
- The product cannot shed microplastics or nanoplastics.
- The product will remain unchanged when heated.
- The product is safe to use repeatedly after it becomes scratched or degraded.
Thousands of chemicals may be used to give plastic its color, softness, flexibility, texture, or durability. Removing one well-known chemical does not make the entire material harmless.
My family does not own a microwave for several reasons. I understand that eliminating your microwave may not be a change you want to make, but even if you continue using one, please transfer your food to glass or ceramic first.
Safer reheating and storage habits
- Transfer food to glass or ceramic before reheating.
- Reheat food on the stove or in the oven when possible.
- Store leftovers in glass containers.
- Avoid placing very hot food directly into plastic.
- Do not allow plastic wrap to touch hot food.
- Replace scratched, cloudy, warped, or degraded containers.
- Bring a glass container for restaurant leftovers when practical.
- Choose stainless steel for cold storage when glass is inconvenient.
Reconsider Bottled Water
Studies have found significant microplastic and nanoplastic contamination in bottled water.
Choose a reusable glass or stainless-steel water bottle whenever possible. If you use a home filtration system, maintain it properly and replace its filters according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Even filtration systems can become less effective or begin contributing particles when components are not replaced as scheduled.
The goal is not perfection. It is reducing a repeated exposure that may happen several times every day.
Look at How Your Food Is Packaged
When possible:
- Buy foods packaged in glass instead of plastic.
- Use glass containers for leftovers and meal preparation.
- Replace plastic wrap with reusable alternatives such as beeswax wraps.
- Avoid repeatedly reusing thin takeout containers.
- Remove food from plastic packaging before heating it.
- Do not pour boiling liquids into plastic containers.
Pay special attention to fatty or acidic foods because they may interact differently with food packaging, especially when heat is involved.
Check Your Tea Bags
Some tea bags contain plastic mesh or plastic-based sealing materials. Hot water can cause these materials to release microplastic and nanoplastic particles.
Choose loose-leaf tea or tea bags that are specifically verified as plastic-free.
Reduce Synthetic Fibers Where It Is Practical
Polyester, nylon, acrylic, and other synthetic fabrics can shed microfibers during wear and washing.
You do not need to replace your entire wardrobe tomorrow. Start with the items that touch your body and bedding most frequently.
When possible:
- Choose cotton, linen, wool, or other natural fibers.
- Use a microfiber-catching laundry bag or washing-machine filter.
- Wash synthetic clothing less aggressively.
- Avoid replacing natural-fiber items with synthetic versions.

Reduce Household Dust
Microplastics are also present in household dust.
