Then we have another huge piece of the puzzle: your gut microbiome.

Your digestive tract is home to a massive community of microorganisms and their genetic material and metabolic byproducts. Researchers are actively studying how this microbial ecosystem participates in gut-brain communication through neurological, immune, endocrine and metabolic pathways.

Your stress response increases alertness, raises heart rate and blood pressure and redirects resources toward systems that can help you respond to an immediate threat. When the danger passes, your nervous system should be able to shift back toward a calmer, restorative state.

The gut-brain axis is also connected with other important chemical messengers, including dopamine and melatonin, and our gut microbes can influence the availability and metabolism of compounds involved in neurotransmitter production.

Researchers are studying connections between the gut microbiome and mood, stress response, anxiety and depression, sleep, memory and cognition — and even neurological conditions including Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease.

We're also learning that this relationship can become a feedback loop.
